Alaska operates on a grander scale than anywhere else in the United States. Snow-capped mountains rise straight from the sea, glaciers calve into quiet fjords, and humpback whales surface beside the ship while bald eagles circle overhead. Pack binoculars; you will want them on deck more often than you expect.
Most first visits start at sea, and the first decision is the ship: a large, family-friendly vessel with plenty to do on board, or a small expedition ship that reaches waterways the big ships can’t. Shore days are where the trip becomes yours; we plan each port around what your group most wants to see.
The second decision is whether to add a few nights inland at Denali National Park, before or after the cruise. Early summer brings long days and wildflowers, while late summer is often best for wildlife.
