Written for couples who want the sea and the lake in one trip, with a single travel day between them. The busier days come early, with Capri, Pompeii and Ravello, so your time on Lake Como can be slow.
The itinerary
Day by day
Day 1
Arrival on the Amalfi Coast
Your driver collects you in Naples, and the last stretch of the drive runs along the cliffs above the sea. Tonight's only plan is the terrace of your sea-view room.
Day 2
Positano at Leisure
See Positano slowly and on foot, up and down its stairways and past its small boutiques, then take a long lunch by the beach. Aperitivo starts around six.
Day 3
Capri by Boat
A boat is yours for the day, with swim stops in coves best reached from the water and time ashore on Capri and up in Anacapri. You're back at the hotel by late afternoon.
Day 4
Pompeii and Ravello
An archaeologist walks you through Pompeii's streets and houses. Later, head up to Ravello for its cliff-top gardens and stay for dinner in the piazza.
Day 5
North to Lake Como
A first-class train takes you from Naples to Milan, and a driver covers the last stretch to Lake Como. It's the trip's longest travel day, so we keep the evening clear.
Day 6
Villas by Boat
Spend the day on the lake by private boat, stepping ashore at historic villas and their gardens, with lunch at a lakeside trattoria along the way.
Day 7
Bellagio
Climb Bellagio's stepped streets in the morning, while they're quiet, and keep the afternoon for a lounger at the hotel. End with a farewell dinner by the water.
Day 8
Home from Milan
After breakfast, your driver takes you from the lake to Milan's airport, one to two hours away by road.
Want it a little different?
Add nights in Rome or a cooking-class day in a lemon grove, reverse the order to finish on the coast, or keep the whole trip on the Amalfi Coast.
