Two nights on Oahu for its history, then four on Maui for the beaches, joined by one short flight. Hanauma Bay, the USS Arizona Memorial and the black-sand beach on the Road to Hāna all take reservations, some only a few days ahead, and we keep track of each one for you.

The itinerary

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Aloha, Oahu

A driver meets you at Honolulu airport for the short ride to Waikiki. With the time difference, a late-afternoon swim and an early dinner are all anyone will want.

  2. Day 2

    Pearl Harbor and Waikiki

Jet lag makes an early start easy, which suits Pearl Harbor and the boat out to the USS Arizona Memorial. In the afternoon, the gentle waves off Waikiki make it a good place for a first surf lesson, which we can add for the family.

  3. Day 3

    Hanauma Bay, Then Maui

Snorkel in the sheltered water of Hanauma Bay in the morning. After lunch, a flight of about 40 minutes takes you to Maui, where your rental car is waiting.

  4. Day 4

    Molokini by Boat

Snorkel boats head out early, while the water is calmest, to the crescent-shaped crater of Molokini, where the water is famously clear. The afternoon is for the pool.

  5. Day 5

    The Road to Hāna

A guide does the driving on this winding coastal road, stopping at waterfalls, a black-sand beach and a banana-bread stand. It's a full day, so the evening is quiet.

  6. Day 6

    Beach Day and a Lūʻau

Nothing is booked until evening, when the family has seats at a lūʻau for Hawaiian food, music and hula.

  7. Day 7

    Home from Maui

Drop the rental car at Kahului airport, which has direct flights to many mainland cities.

Want it a little different?

Stay on Maui for all six nights, add a sunrise at Haleakalā (reservations required), or trade Oahu for Kauai or the Big Island.
